HOUSTON (Houston Chronicle) – A lack of financing to build apartments in light of a tightening credit market could boost the Houston-area new home market, according to Metrostudy President Mike Inselmann.

While about 15,000 new apartments are already under construction, the absorption of these units will severely diminish housing options.

Inselmann sees this as an opportunity to sell houses.

Despite sharp cuts in new home production, Houston still ranked as the nation's top home-building market from March 2008 to March 2009, when builders started 22,502 homes and closed 28,326.
