HOUSTON (Houston Chronicle) – Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has sued Houston-based O’Conner & Associates based on allegations it violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and the Texas Property Tax Code.

According to a lawsuit filed Friday by the state in Harris County, O’Conner filed thousands of tax protests without taxpayers’ consent, failed to appear at hearings and submitted fraudulent documents, among other violations.

O’Conner, which represents Texas homeowners in attempts to reduce the amount of property taxes they pay, denies the charges.

The state is seeking civil penalties of up to $20,000 per violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and up to $250,000 for each time the company financially harmed a consumer age 65 or older.
